About
TIME, MASS
We are pleased to present Seth Keller’s new collection of furniture and objects. Harmonizing Keller’s material knowledge and instinct with process and design intent, each work in the collection invites us to explore a personal connection with the ‘tree’ itself.
TIME:
The studio is full of wood, some stood as trees just last week, while others are stacked neatly three years into the process of drying.
While furniture is the end result, I am immersed in the world of timber, many years building an intimate knowledge of its myriad processes, yet learning every day.
A log, often sits for months or years until the form reveals itself to me.
After realizing its final form, the object will continue to change perfectly,
to stain with use, to crack and warp as it becomes itself.
MASS:
I was trained first as a carpenter and in creating objects I both rely on and challenge the construction and woodworking techniques of that trade. But, precision is secondary to sensibility.
Eschewing the tools that flatten and smooth, I opt for chainsaws, sawmills and grinders. Each tool leaving its inherent textural signature.
And to realize a form, I sometimes rely on techniques from other disciplines, like that of a stone mason or seamstress.
Again, the objects are built foremost from sensibility, and each object has a sensibility of its own.
To express gravity, softness, dependence, to reveal a shadow, to perceive the wall in a new way.
To become itself, the self that existed first in the log.
