Art in Action

A series of projects that harness the I.M. Weiss Gallery family of artists to not only draw attention to serious needs in our broader community, but create an opportunity to help.

Art in Action sets out to remind us that change begins with one (seemingly small) action amplified through collective and consistent effort. I know I am not alone in feeling overwhelmed and helpless in this world that feels as though it is crumbling beneath us. I have been asking myself, “as just one person, what can I do?”

Art in Action is my response. Because I believe, now more than ever, art is an important catalyst for change. Art is a lens through which we can see our world - the good and the bad - with a perspective that is not our own or one filtered through an algorithm designed to appeal to our own desires. Because of this, art has the power to make us think, bring us together, and move us into action.

Art in Action channels this power very deliberately to function as a direct tool for change in our community.

March 7-8: Helping Tackle Period Poverty in Detroit

Partnering with I Support The Girls - Detroit + Collaborating with Paula Schubatis, we gathered donations of menstrual products for distribution in Detroit Public Schools and women’s shelters.

We gathered over 3,000 period product donations, enough to supply over 10 women with a year’s worth of period products!

  • Usage Data: The average person uses roughly 20–25 disposable products per cycle.

  • Yearly Need: Over 12 cycles, that equates to approximately 240–300 products per year per person.

  • Total Calculation: 3,000 products / 300 products per year = 10 women fully supplied for a year.
