I.M. Weiss Gallery

focuses on contemporary craft disciplines, artists and ideas that make compelling objects.

Our program is a living archive of craft and design for Detroit and beyond.

I.M. Weiss Gallery was founded in 2014, originally as NEXT:SPACE, by Isabelle Weiss, an Accredited Appraiser and Contemporary Fine/Decorative Arts specialist in Detroit, MI.

Our mission is to nurture a new generation of our region’s iconic craft and design legacy.

We approach our first decade of supporting contemporary craft and design in Detroit with renewed focus on scholarship and personal stewardship - important tools in building the value and legacy of craft and design in the contemporary art market - for Detroit and beyond.

Isabelle Weiss, Founder / Director

I.M. Weiss Gallery was founded in 2014 by Isabelle Weiss

Isabelle Weiss founded I.M. Weiss Gallery (previously NEXT:SPACE) in 2014 after beginning her career as an appraiser of fine and decorative art at a regional auction house. Working in the secondary market, Isabelle honed her eye for important design of the 20th century and developed the perspective with which she founded the gallery. Through exhibitions and documentary projects, Isabelle acts as a ‘future historian’, consciously building an archive that supports the value and legacy of artists working in contemporary craft and design disciplines.

Isabelle is also an accredited appraiser of contemporary fine and decorative arts and the founder of art appraisal firm CollectorAnonymous - which she directs in tandem with I.M. Weiss Gallery in Detroit’s North End.

Isabelle regularly publishes projects examining the value of collectible craft and design and has contributed to publications including Surface magazine. She also presents lectures on emerging trends in art, craft and design collecting for organizations such as International Society of Appraisers and Canadian Society of Decorative Arts. Isabelle earned B.A.s in the History of Art, and Linguistics from University of Michigan; she earned and maintains her appraisal accreditation from International Society of Appraisers.

Isabelle has been a member of the Advisory Board of the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum since 2014 and is on the Collections and Exhibitions Committee. She is also the past Chair of the Fine Art Committee of the International Society of Appraisers.
