Katie Shulman

is an artist from Washington, DC who currently resides in Detroit, Michigan. Katie Shulman makes fiber-based sculpture and installations through a choreographed process.

Tearing, knitting and wrapping establish a physical cadence that is reminiscent of movement patterns that have been imprinted upon her own body using materials including elastic bra strapping, bedsheets, clothing and found objects. These materials, embedded with histories or suggestions of human behavior, imbue abstracted forms with characteristics that suggest a body.

She holds an MFA in Studio Art from Syracuse University and a BFA in Fine Art from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her work has been shown wildly in New York State including at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, NY and The Strohl Art Gallery in Chautauqua, NY.

In addition to her art practice, Katie has an over nine-year career as an arts administrator. She has worked in various institutions of higher learning and nonprofit art spaces in New York City like The 92nd Y, The Studio Institute and Hunter College. She currently teaches at College for Creative Studies and serves as a Pre-College Counselor at her alma mater, the Penny W. Stamps School Of Art & Design.

“For me, working in the studio is the equivalent to a training routine, and I dedicate myself to practicing. I do this so that I can create sculptures that are stand-ins for an expressive body. The objects I make are both symbols and present-day artifacts. They are sculpted abstract figures and the living proof of my dedication to interact with my surroundings through the physical act of making.” - Katie Shulman
