Ergo <ITSELF>

Sept.9 - Oct. 14, 2023

An exhibition by Paula Schubatis

About Ergo <ITSELF>

“When driven purely by our intuition, we can develop a strong sense of connection not only with an object, but also our environment and ultimately the human condition that unites all.”

- Paula Schubatis

Our most ambitious exhibition yet, Ergo <ITSELF> is a literal, tangible manifestation of the internal workings that drive Detroit-based interdisciplinary artist Paula Schubatis.
Curated in the historic Boyer Campbell Building, the exhibition takes over two floors of the industrial space, tirelessly crafted over two weeks by @paula_schubatis and truly decades in the making.

Perhaps you know Schubatis most for her painterly, hand woven tapestries.Perhaps you’ve experienced the many installations she has created throughout Detroit over the past 10 years. These are just two facets of her richly interwoven practice (pun intended!).

Ergo <ITSELF> is more than an exhibition, it is a journey through all the facets of Schubatis’ practice and together we designed the visual and immersive experience as a single artwork in, and of, itself: ergo, itself.

By blurring the boundaries between the installation/environment, the object and "itself" (the individual), Schubatis creates a total immersive experience that reflects the nature of the individual objects she creates. Schubatis creates each object to decode certain structures we impose on our space and ourselves - even in language and mathematics - and to encode connectivity as a form of communication. This concept is not only communicated through form but also through materiality as the majority of materials Schubatis engages are found - from recycled textiles, to reclaimed objects such as shoe laces, caution tape, Ikea bags, hardware supplies etc.
